Education

The Canal Centre provides a different learning environment for Primary School children that is managed by retired school teachers. The visits cover water safety, aspects of canals and boats and can be used to reinforce the Primary School curriculum. Around 800 Primary School children take part in these visits each year.

The visits are structured around school worksheets for either Primary 1-2 or Primary 3-7. These sheets should be downloaded and sufficient printed for your group prior to your visit.

Each visit is one hour consisting of a 30 minute presentation in the Mel Gray Centre and 30 minute trip on our boat, St Magdalene. The maximum number that can be accommodated on the boat is 36 children and 4 adults. There must be a minimum of one adult helper for every 10 children.

LUCS provides School’s Visit Risk Guidance to assist schools with their responsibility to undertake risk assessments for school visits.

There is no charge for visits but booking is essential for all school parties available on application to the Booking Secretary (bookings@lucs.org.uk)
